Galbi (Korean Short Ribs)

Community Recipe

This month’s recipe was submitted by sister Noor of Greenwood Indiana. She and her family love Korean food but so many of the Korean restaurants use ingredients that are not halal for us. Sister Noor took this recipe from a Korean friend and made substitutions so everything would be halal and so delicious.

Korean Galbi (short ribs)

Ingredients:

1 c. light soy sauce

1 c. sweet soy sauce

2 tsp. oyster sauce

1 c. fish sauce

sugar/brown sugar/honey

2 tsp. salt

onion, garlic, ginger

2 c. apple cider

black pepper

white pepper

1 c. sesame oil or olive oil

1-2 lbs. beef short ribs

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients together and add short ribs. Marinate overnight or 5-6 hours before you grill it. Grill until the beef is well done.

Dear Hafsa

Dear Hafsa

My in laws are coming to visit us for about three months, IN WINTER. What ideas do you have for making their stay special ? Places to go around Indy and things to do at the house. We have three kids ranging in age from 3-10 so we need it to be kid friendly too.

Assalamualaikum Cold Daughter in Law,

I can totally relate to this situation!

First, I would advise you to stay positive and excited about the visit, even in this cold weather. Your positivity can spread to others and make them enjoy themselves even in this weather.

The good thing is that there are many things to do in Indy during the colder months, and most of them are great for kids too!

I would suggest the Indianapolis Children's Museum. Your in laws would be able to interact and watch your children laugh and have fun and there are also many areas to sit in all the exhibits. They also allow you to bring in your own food that you can eat in the cafe. You can make a whole day out of it.

Kids Empire on the Southside (near Greenwood Park Mall) is also a a fun indoor play place for families. They have a big kid area and a little kid area, a lot of tables and chair for parents and grandparents. They also have a snack cafe. (They do not allow outside food and drink)

For more adventurous in laws try Indy Fuel Tank or Carmel Ice Stadium for a day of ice skating.

If you google "What do in Indianapolis with family" you can find some more ideas.

For at home ideas, consider these:

Making a craft together - Five Below has a lot of neat craft kits.

Do a science project - Five Below has science kids also.

Let your in laws teach the older kids how to make a simple traditional food.

Tell stories- have your in laws share their own childhood stories with your children.

Make hot chocolate and chai and chat. Ask each other questions about goals, likes and dislikes.

Have a talent show- let the kids put on a show of their special talents for their grandparents. Mom and dad can be the announcers, and the grandparents can enjoy the show.

You can also check out Pinterest for more craft/science/recipe ideas.

Hope this helps and enjoy the visit!

Salam,

Hafsa
